Best Book on Delivering Streaming Audio on the Web!
This is the best book on delivering audio over the Internet. The book reviews the three main system components required for streaming audio (encoder, server, and player) and discusses how they interact. The authors do an outstanding job of discussing the trade-offs of various streaming formats. Of particular value to anyone who wants to set-up their own Internet Radio station, it provides an excellent step-by-step walkthrough of configuring the software for three of the most popular audio streaming formats. It includes a CD-ROM with many audio examples, sound related software, and links to additional information. One word of warning -- the book was poorly edited and the editing errors are distracting at times (this cost the book a five star rating). Despite this, if you're thinking of establishing your own Internet Radio station, this is THE book to have!

Who killed the proofreader!
I enjoyed the nuts and bolts of the book and learned more or less what I needed to learn. But I guess these guys have been so involved in sound that they forgot how to spell & type!
The number of typo's in the book are unforgivable and might just qualify as THE most error filled book since the Guttenberg got off the ground.
Dudes, someone just didn't care about this one!

A Complete, Easy to Use Reference for Online Audio
Finally, a book on Web-based audio that covers all of the latest technology AND includes practical examples. And is typical of books published by Peachpit Press it was clearly and succintly written, without alot of useless "filler". I came away with a better understanding of digital audio and how to actually incorporate it into my web pages. It was well worth the money.

excellent book
This book is very well-written and is especially good for people who are not technical experts.

Experience The Impact That Audio Can Make On The Web!

Ron Simpson has produced a comprehensive volume on everything concerning Web audio. In a technical book that is remarkably compact, he covers the various sound formats and how to convert among them, the major plug-ins and how to use them, how to create files, what the browser wars mean for audio, how to get the highest possible recording quality, and the process of hiring and recording voice talent. He even manages to include a section on the legalities of copyrights and how to stay out of trouble.
Best of all, Simpson explains the subject in a simple, engaging manner for intermediate users while providing useful information for those experienced in interactive Web-site production. He assumes a basic knowledge of Web-site creation and focuses on what makes for sound design using the state-of-the-art tools. While most companion CD-ROMs are mere add-ons, his is an important part of the book. It features the files for working with the book's 50 tutorials, as well as a variety of demos, shareware, and even numerous audio files that can be used on Web sites and in multimedia presentations free of charge. --Elizabeth Lewis

Everything you need to know about Cutting Edge Web Audio
Talk about comprehensive, I busted my butt for a year to put this book together and it's more than just a book about web audio. It also covers the latest Mac/Windows audio editing and recording software and the relevant plug-ins that will devastate your competitors and increase your popularity all in one shot. In the real world not everyone has the same needs or budget and I wanted to be sure to address as wide of an audience as was possible. Real Audio is great but then so is Shockwave Audio, QuickTime, Liquid Audio, Beatnik, streaming MPEG, and there's even more choices. Don't worry, they're all featured in this book.
Being a musician as well as an author I tailored "Cutting Edge Web Audio" to speak to not only the multimedia/web developer but also to those of you whose expertise runs more towards the area of sound and music. I felt it was equally important that all levels of audio expertise were addressed as well. The tutorials run the gambit from shareware on up to the more expensive and complicated applications. Whether you're a veteran or beginner there's something here for you.
The CD-ROM that comes along with this book is a very useful unit. There is demo software from a number of the manufacturers whose development tools just happen to be featured in the book's tutorials. Some of the tutorials can even be completed using nothing but the demo or evaluation software found on the CD-ROM. For those of you with limited software resources, the results of each tutorial step are also saved as both WAVE and System 7 Sound files. Simply follow any tutorial (in the book) and click the corresponding sound file on the WebAudio CD-ROM to hear the results, regardless of platform and application. There is a separate folder for each of the chapters tutorial files, making it pretty easy to find your way around.
As a bonus I've added (to the CD-ROM) a few music files from my personal music library as well as a few surprises from the CyberTunz music library (volume 1). All are available for the! use of the readers of "Cutting Edge Web Audio". With all the free stuff available on the WebAudio CD you've probably saved enough to easily cover the cost of the book. Such a deal.
Updates! To keep the book current I've created a support page that will have updates and supplementary material for each chapter. There is also news, web audio examples and links to all the manufacturers development tools featured in the book. This is all part of my plan to make sure the readers of "Cutting Edge Web Audio" create the best of the best.

Completely comprehensive yet superbly accessable.
This book is one of the nmost thorough treatises on audio software I have ever seen. The tutorials (at least some of them, that I can tell) are original not just excerpted from the manufacturers manuals and are detailed enough to be thorough yet easy to read and understand. If you're thinking about getting into audio software whether for the web or any other creative endeavor, this book is a must read.

If you create audio for the web then get this book!
This is an excellent collection of tips, techniques and resources for creating web based audio content. It introduced me to several new tools and options that I did not know about and is worth owning.

Covering the gambit from General MIDI to Liquid Audio, this excellent guide explores all of the current and upcoming technologies available for distributing audio over the Internet. The book explores each solution in detail, walking you through the process of creation and deployment, with a focus on the variety of tools you'll need to master. Many of these--plus some general HTML and Java utilities--are included on the bundled CD-ROM as demos or trial versions. Internet Audio Sourcebook discusses the pros and cons of various scripting and streaming solutions--quality versus bandwidth, available user base--in each section. There's even a chapter that serves as a digital home studio primer, introducing basic audio and setup concepts that are essential for preparing audio for Internet distribution and just good to understand.
The chapter on MIDI is an excellent explanation of an often misused, misunderstood, and much maligned format. You will also find discussions of real-time communication, voice synthesis, and voice recognition. Appendices cover HTML 3.2 and other sources of audio and Internet information, and the glossary provides quick reference for many of the terms used throughout the text.

Enliven your Web pages with voices, sound, and music. New audio techniques can be used to create musical backdrops to Web pages, produce Web presentations with narration, provide audio help to Web page visitors, broadcast radio material over the Web, and communicate globally using audio conferencing and Internet phones. Internet Audio Sourcebook explains the processes, tools, and techniques for enhancing Web sites with sound, using JavaScript, HTML, Java applets, and advanced sound-editing and production applications. CD-ROM contains fully functional demos of top-notch sound processing applications, such as Sonic Foundry's Sound Forge and Hohner Midia's Samplitude Studio.

Focuses way too much on Liquid Audio
I thought this book was ok in general terms if you are a complete beginner or interested in Liquid Audio. Industry trends have been moving towards Netshow or RealAudio and these technologies aren't given enough space in this big book.
So if you are looking for documentation about either Netshow or RealMedia, dont waste your time.

Internet Books Editor's
Recommended BookIf you're serious about putting sound on the Web--more than some generic beeps and boops--this book deserves a place on your shelf. The authors take great pains to help you plan your efforts, letting you know what surprises might lie in store and helping you avoid unpleasant technical, legal, and logistical pitfalls. Then they lay out enough working audio knowledge to demystify everything from digital recording to establishing an online "radio" station. The technical matter is put forward with such clarity that it all seems simple. It's about far more than the basics, but easy enough for beginners.

A practical book that is highly referenced, it contains a fine appendix with many resources and a reading list. Recommended for patient education and consumer health collections.
Robert Shannon Ph.D., Director, Auditory Implant Research Laboratory, House Ear Institute
A thoughtful and moving personal story of the problems and trials of being deaf in a hearing world. Beneath the surface there is a profound story here, one that tells about how society treats people who are different, and how those individuals struggle to cope. While cochlear implants are merely medical devices, Bev Biderman has captured the full personal and social human story of the impact of such devices on people who get them and on their families and friends. And Bev Biderman is an intelligent and articulate writer who has captured all of this in an enjoyably readable book.

By far the most extensive compilation of resources relating to cochlear implants that I have ever seen.
Susan Goldberg Ph.D., Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, University of Toronto
The book is very well written and really drew me in quickly. The combination of personal story plus detailed information makes for compelling reading. I literally went through it in one sitting and didn't want to put it down.

Wonderful description of CI activation. Great book!
This book is a great read for anyone trying to decide if they want to get a CI or for anyone who might have already had the surgery and want a good realistic description of what the activation might be like. That's when I read it, while waiting to heal after surgery and before activation. As a matter of fact, I think it should be recommended reading for all CI canidates. It helped on that first day to know that even if I didn't hear speech, it would get better! Lots of interesting history of CI research and personal stories. Thank you, Bev, for a great book!

You must read Wired For Sound!
Beverly Biderman's journey from deafness to hearing is eloquently captured in her compelling book, Wired For Sound. The reader shares the author's kaleidoscopic array of emotions which range from guilt and anger over her own hearing loss to unsurpassed joy in the new hearing she receives from her cochlear implant. Those readers who have a severe to profound hearing loss or who are deaf and who long to hear will feel an empathy in her travails which is almost uncanny.
Wired For Sound reflects more, however, than merely a personal experience. It compiles detailed resource material on cochlear implants and, thus, is must reading for anyone who is investigating the potential benefits and occasional pitfalls of cochlear implantation. While Ms. Biderman has chosen for herself a cochlear implant to enable her to more fully assimilate herself within the hearing world to which she has, even when deaf, always belonged, her presentation is unbiased and non-judgmental. She respects the Deaf culture and does not engage in proselytizing.
Wired For Sound is a book which transcends the issue of hearing versus deafness. Indeed, this marvelous saga of courage and compassion offers any caring person hope for the future of humanity.

This is a "must-read" for everyone!!
Anyone who is interested in deafness and cochlear implants will find this book a real page turner. It gripped my interest like a vise, even though I have read numerous "deaf" autobiographies and, as one of the editors of CONTACT, a journal about cochlear implants, am thoroughly acquainted with the focal point of the book: cochlear implants.
This is not just another "telling what it's like" book. Wired for Sound breaks ground in explaining with concise clarity what cochlear implants do, how they work, and what it's like to have an implant. In the process, Biderman goes back to her deaf roots-her deaf father's arrival in Canada from Russia and marriage to a hearing woman, her mother-and, with an amazing candor that I have not seen to this degree in other autobiographies by hearing impaired people, shares with the reader how she felt about her deafness as she grew into adulthood and later.
This in-depth discussion of how she came to terms with being deaf runs side by side with her cochlear implant experience. What keeps this book from being merely a personal story is the wealth of information about cochlear implants and the corollary topic of Deaf culture Biderman offers her readers in such a readable style that no one would yawn through the pages.
The book contains 6 chapters, through which are sprinkled like delectable confection quotes from people of all deaf walks of life, followed by detailed endnotes. Dr. John Niparko of Johns Hopkins University Hospital wrote the movingly eloquent foreword. A comprehensive list of resources includes support groups, hearing-related organizations, research organizations, cochlear implant manufacturers, education and rehabilitation groups, newsletters and journals, audiovisual resources, and the Internet. A book list, with a one- or two-sentence description of each book, is provided for those who wish to read further.
Chapter One, appropriately, begins with Biderman's transition from deafness to hearing with her cochlear implant: her "hookup" to her speech processor in her audiologist's office. We feel we're a fly on her shoulder as she takes us through that first day of her new life step by step.
In Chapter Two she describes her efforts to train herself to hear again. Here, her analytical skills come into play as she sifts through the adaptations to deafness she had built up all her life and tells how she had to shed these habits in order to effectively utilize her "new" hearing. We feel the roller coaster of emotions she experiences during her early months after hookup.
In the following chapter, Biderman delves into her hereditary deafness and describes her progressive hearing loss and efforts to pass as "hearing." This chapter includes a discussion of the prevalence of hearing loss and the various mechanisms she employed to communicate orally.
Family relationships, as affected by deafness, are superbly and delicately analyzed in Chapter Four, as Biderman bares her soul for the reader's benefit. The result of this intensely personal discourse is that even a reader who has never met a hearing impaired individual will acquire a sense of the enormously complex socio-emotional aspects of deafness and cochlear implant use.
In Chapter Five, Biderman goes back to the days just before her implant surgery to tell us about the process by which she came to get her implant. She gives a brief history of the development of cochlear implants and describes in clear, readily digestible language how they work.
Deaf culture is brought forward and laid on the table for readers in Chapter Six. Biderman writes bluntly and sensitively-an incredible achievement in my view-about the opposition of the Deaf community to cochlear implants, especially for children. She shows how Deaf people have formed a way of life based on their deafness and common communication mode and do not regard it as a medical condition to be fixed. While presenting the Deaf perspective, she discusses the limitations of their reliance on American Sign Language (ASL) for communication and supports the right of individuals, including parents, to opt for a cochlear implant if they so desire. In fact, Biderman makes it clear at the end of the book that, regardless of which route parents of newly diagnosed deaf children take, their children will live with the profound consequences of their parents' choice for the rest of their lives.
The final chapter, appropriately, comments on future developments in cochlear implant technology. Here, Biderman includes a thoughtful discussion of the dilemma many implant recipients will eventually face: whether to be re-implanted to take advantage of newer technology that will further improve their hearing. She fully accepts the likelihood she herself will one day be re-implanted.
To my mind, there are two minor shortcomings to this fascinating book. First, the sole illustration of what a cochlear implant looks like is not very clear and would only bewilder someone totally unversed in this technology. Second, I would have liked to learn more about Biderman's experiences in the hearing world as she adjusted to her new "ear." For instance, did her improved hearing alter her perceptions of the world around her?
Wired for Sound should be required reading for students in sign language classes in order to give them an understanding of the vast diversity that exists among hearing impaired persons-a diversity not only of hearing capability but also of communication and lifestyle. Actually, everyone should be encouraged to read this book. But, as a cochlear implant user myself, perhaps I am biased in making that statement!
